WiFi firm gets more funds from ePLDT

The Philippine Long Distance Telephone Co. (PLDT) said on Tuesday its information and communications technology arm, ePLDT, has sunk in additional funds into Airborne Access Corp.

In a disclosure to the Philippine Stock Exchange, PLDT said ePLDT invested P20 million in affiliate Airborne Access, the country’s leading provider of Wireless Fidelity (WiFi) hotspots, or wireless Internet access points.

PLDT said the fund infusion raises its subsidiary’s equity interest in Airborne Access to 51 percent from 1.9 percent previously.

ePLDT acquired Airborne Access in May 2003 in an aggressive move to deliver next-generation communications technology.

WiFi affords mobility and convenience to frequent travelers and people often working outside their offices. Secure, high-speed Internet access, and even access to their companies’ private networks are not limited to the presence of wires and sockets.

The wireless platform also enables the mobile workforce to accomplish important tasks, projects and research even while on the road with the help of the Internet. This ensures that not a minute is wasted and workflow is not hindered by travel or location changes.

Airborne Access offers prepaid cards at P100 for one-hour use, while postpaid plans are also available at P1,100 a month for unlimited use with a P1,650 set-up fee
