Balanga residents seek closure of open dumpsite

BALANGA CITY, Bataan — About 3,000 families, most of whom were factory workers inside the Bataan Economic Zone (BEZ) complex in Mariveles town, have sought the closure of the open dumpsite as it allegedly endangers their health and well-being.

Gerlie Canlas, Mariveles environment and sanitary management officer told The STAR that the residents have already lodged complaints before Mayor Angel Peliglorio Jr. They claimed that the open dumpside are causing respiratory ailments, skin diseases and other ailments.

Residents of the Barangay Malaya, Maligaya and Kamaya, all within the vicinity of the garbage site are urging local officials to make the necessary legal action or alternative solid waste management program to prevent possible outbreak of diseases due to the unabated burning of industrial waste.

Canlas said the municipal governmnent is now coordinating with BEZ authorities for the formulation of a sanitary waste disposal project to prevent further deterioration of the environment and causing health problems.

About 50 export-oriented factories manufacturing leather bags, sneakers, garments and other items allegedly use raw materials and chemicals in their products and dump a large volume of individual waste directly to the dumpsite.

The municipal environment and sanitary management officer has observed that the industrial waste may contain toxic substances which produce the pungent odor that affects residents
